Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for its astounding aromatherapy benefits. In ancient times essential oils were known for carrying 5 elements...earth, air, water and fire. The fifth element being the life force. It was thought that through distillation it was removing the spirit of the plant. Thus we could petition to bring healing spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally.
In indigenous cultures around the world there is a close and deep relationship and spiritual understanding to our plant kingdom. We have called upon the plant medicines throughout history to aid in our well-being and to bring healing.
Essential oils are scientifically a hydrophobic compound liquid containing volatile compounds from plants, containing the very 'essence' of the plants fragrance. Today, most common essential oils are distilled. Raw plant material, consisting of the flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, seeds, or peel, is put into an alembic (distillation apparatus) over water. As the water is heated, the steam passes through the plant material, vaporizing the volatile compounds. The vapors flow through a coil, where they condense back to liquid, which is then collected in the receiving vessel.
Today we still have wide use of essential oils as we see them being used in our cosmetics, massage therapy, aromatherapy, in ointments and salves, diffusing, and steaming and on an on. Many benefits to support our over all heath physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually.
